Statement
Making art is what drives us. At the same time, we cannot help but be aware of the world in which we work and of the impact our choices can have. The materials we use, the way we work and travel, and the subjects that draw our attention are all part of that awareness.
We are not looking for the barricades or for grand statements. Our concern for nature and climate is simply woven into our work and into the choices we make along the way. Perhaps that is our own form of activism: quiet and sincere, rooted in the belief that small, conscious choices can make a difference.
RENOVATING THE STUDIO
An old workshop was transformed into the studio, retaining its original bricks and beams and incorporating second-hand windows. Good insulation helps keep energy use low, while locally produced Belgian wood pellets provide heating. The garden has been developed with space for a pond, flowers, shrubs and a greenhouse; green roofs are planned.
ENERGY & WATER
Solar panels and a home battery provide electricity for both house and studio. Rainwater is collected for garden use and toilets. The next step is the transition from gas to a heat pump.
WASTE
Waste is sorted and organic kitchen and garden waste is composted. Materials and objects are reused whenever possible, with an emphasis on keeping residual waste low.
MATERIALS
Whenever possible the work makes use of natural, biodegradable materials such as wood, clay and cotton. Second-hand materials are preferred, while reusable and recyclable options are considered when new materials are needed.
PAINT
Water-based paints and stains are used where possible. Some colours are made in the studio from natural pigments and chalk.
FABRIC & THREAD
Natural fabrics and threads are used wherever possible. Potato starch is used as a biodegradable stiffening agent, while synthetic thread is limited to work requiring greater strength or UV resistance.
PACKAGING, SHIPPING & TRAVEL
Transport boxes are made in the studio from lightweight, certified wood and designed for repeated use. Reusable blankets provide protection, supplemented by compostable filling when needed. Plastic packaging is kept to a minimum.
Within Europe, artworks are generally transported by car and trailer rather than by air. The aim is to eventually move to an electric vehicle.
We are pleased to announce that we have successfully qualified as an Active Member for 2025-26 with the Gallery Climate Coalition. This status commemorates that we have implemented environmental sustainability best practices in line with GCC guidance.
Active Membership is not a certification of sustainability, but a claim that we are doing our best to assess, report, and reduce our impact, setting targets in line with science. galleryclimatecoalition.org
