When Are We Going Home 2023

For their first guest exhibition at Kazerne Dossin, Perbal/Bélibaste drew on a painful family history: during the war, their grandfather sheltered six Jewish people. All were arrested and deported, leaving a lasting trauma within the family.

Through conversations with first- and second-generation witnesses, the artists explored how the effects of war can extend across generations. The exhibition considers the impact of war on children, the transmission of trauma, and the role of society in creating space for healing.

The three-part exhibition moves from emotions that are difficult to express, through the process of confronting trauma, towards a hopeful vision in which children can regain a sense of resilience, wonder and freedom.
