Koi 2023

KOI explores the loss of a child and the search for a way to live with such profound grief. It is an exceptionally delicate series, approached with great gentleness and compassion. Drawing inspiration from Chinese elements such as porcelain, lanterns and silk, it creates a visual language around a subject that is often left unspoken: an almost unbearable grief experienced by many, yet rarely talked about.

The materials evoke the fragility and preciousness of childhood, while the predominant watery blue reflects the chill of profound sorrow. Yet within loss, there can also be space for connection, transformation and hope. The koi becomes a guide through this process: "It leads us through the depths of pain, teaching us to confront and transform it. The koi, an ephemeral being, moves beneath the surface of the water, offering insight and wisdom. It descends into darkness, yet returns to embrace the light."
